What is Valentine’s Day?

Originated in the West, February 14th of the solar calendar, a day to celebrate by exchanging gifts. In the West, it is an anniversary of lovers sharing gifts regardless of gender, but in the East, it is a day when women give chocolate to men a little differently. In modern times, it is just a day when chocolate companies are detailed and the original day of day marketing.

Foreign word notation is written as Valentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day according to English pronunciation, but the name Valentine’s Day, which is a one-on-one correspondence between notation and Korean alphabets, is commonly used. Since it started as a religious anniversary, it should be called St. Valentino’s Birthday, but it is worldly called Valentine’s Day, such as the relationship between Christmas and Christmas.

Similarly, Valentine is quite used unlike Halloween, which is a British-American anniversary and has a contradictory normative and customary notation.

The origin of Valentine’s Day.

In the Roman era, the marriage of legion soldiers was prohibited. This is because he was worried that he would leave the military because he missed his family. Since Emperor Augustus established the imperial defense net, legions deployed at the border have often been deployed elsewhere (such as units west of the German River being deployed to Syria), so many problems arise when legion soldiers marry. So there were cases where they secretly raised children and officially married after being discharged from the military. If discovered, he was severely punished.

According to a legend that originated, a priest named Valentino violated the law for each other’s loved ones and secretly married them, but was discovered and executed (3). In honor of this, it is known as the St. Valentino Day (Valentine’s Day), and it is unclear whether it is a real person, but it is also viewed as the partial sum of at least three real people in denial.

Meanwhile, the relationship between St. Valentino’s celebration and lovers’ love is seen from England in the 14th century, and in the poem of the British poet’s draft, February 14th is a special day for all birds to come to find a mate to mate. There is no evidence, but many people estimate that it is related to the Roman festival Lupercalia [4) or the UNO Pebruata , held in mid-February (13-15).

Today is Valentine’s Day.

In modern times, it has become a day to give gifts to the opposite sex, but regardless of gender, gifts (flowers, cakes, cards, etc.) are exchanged with neighbors, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances.

In the United States, in many regions, elementary school students have the custom of turning cards and small packages of snacks to their entire class or friends. Here, precocious children secretly insert a more special Valentine (7) into their favorite children, which makes a fuss about what hidden meaning is that the gifts they received are more special. On the other hand, there are cases where bullying or unpopular people do not receive a single card. Such Valentine’s events are also quite important in British-American cartoons, where children are the main characters. In “Peanuts”, episodes of Liners giving Lydia a gift for Valentine’s Day appear, and in “The Simpsons” several times.

In 1861, a character named Richard Cadbury (1832-1899) of the United Kingdom planned an advertisement to present chocolate on Valentine’s Day. In fact, there is a custom of giving chocolate among gifts from Valentine’s Day in the West. It is not limited to chocolate, but also presents flowers, perfumes, and jewelry, and gifts given on Valentine’s Day are usually called valentines. There are also people who deliberately choose this day and propose.

Of course, chocolate is sold a lot as a gift, but in fact, there are many other things to gift besides chocolate. Internet and most magazines feature that year’s trend product guides that can be given as gifts, and depending on age and marital status, items such as jewelry, perfume, brand bags, small accessories, and trendy small electronics (i-pods, opening mobile phones under the same account) are preferred. The important thing is that it is more desirable to buy and receive expensive items, or to cherish or practical items that the other person likes and cherishes. One example of this gesture is giving small antiques such as antique teacups to those who collect antiques. Or it may be better to see if the person you want to give has a wish list and give it out of the ones listed there. It is good for both because there is an element that can surprise you to some extent while choosing from the list of things you want to have. Most sites, such as Amazon’s dot-com and department store websites, have this function. Summer items such as swimsuits and sunglasses are popular as Valentine’s Day gifts in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia and New Zealand or Singapore, which is a tropical area close to the equator, because February is summer.

In East Asia, Valentine’s Day was fixed as a day when women gave chocolate to men. It is said to be a misunderstanding caused by the widespread misinterpretation of Valentine’s Day cited by a chocolate company. Opinions are divided on when and how Valentine’s chocolate marketing, which originally started in the UK, came in, but the prevailing theory is that companies brought in by referring to overseas marketing methods for profit from sales. It’s literally the biggest part of the year for chocolate sales companies. Other countries except East Asian countries generally have a large Christian influence, resulting in the largest chocolate sales of the year on Easter. Many Western countries exchange a variety of chocolates, including chocolate rabbits, on Easter beyond Valentine’s Day. Therefore, the chocolates that were not sold on Valentine’s Day are recovered, melted, and re-printed in the shape of a rabbit and sold.

Perhaps because there are many people who become couples in Korea that day, as a joke, among the goals of the solo unit, killing couples is included. Of course, the probability of realization is very rare. In fact, it is often thought that it is not a new couple, but rather a monstrous event day for people who have already been formed as a couple. Fortunately, for solo students who are students, they are on vacation (9), so they have an excuse to blame their misfortune.

Converting this day to the lunar calendar, it will be from the end of December to the end of January. If the leap month falls on this day, it will be Yoon December, but this is rarely the case because the lunar leap December does not fall well.

2021 is the end of the Lunar New Year holiday + Sunday + COVID-19 incident, reducing the culture of taking care of Valentine’s Day and ending the special quarantine period for Lunar New Year. From February 15, the next day, social distancing across the country will go down one notch.

In Japan, Morozoff officially began promoting and selling in 1958, and it is assumed that the full-fledged trend began in the 1970s, when it spread after the 60s. What is certain is that this phenomenon occurred after World War II and Westernization began in earnest. In addition, in modern Japan, chocolate is sometimes turned around at work, called loyalty chocolate, and it is said that social stress is sometimes mentioned because of this.
