What does marriage mean?

Marriage or marriage refers to a ritual and contract in which two people become a couple. Because it has social binding power, it is clearly distinguished from cohabitation or relationship. When you get married, you switch to married (men are married men and women are married women.

In human society, it has long been very important because marriage creates a ‘family’, the smallest unit of society. Therefore, marriage is also one of the most important events in a person’s life.

Meaning of marriage

In the past, regardless of the opinions of marriage parties, parents and adults in the family often married as determined. There were even cases where I first saw my spouse on the day of the wedding. In some cases, we fell in love with each other in our lives, but we lived together all our lives because of the old social atmosphere that taboo divorce even if we didn’t get along well. However, in modern society, most people marry according to the free companionship and will of the parties.

In the old days, premarital purity was important, there were many cases where men and women hurriedly married to cover up sex. Furthermore, it seemed unusual in many cultures to connect rape victims and perpetrators. This happened in the case of Korea, and the Daegu High Court ruled in the 1970s, and even in 1998, a similar incident occurred. # In some cultures, it is still “present progressive,” and in Jordan, where moderate Islam is the mainstream in the Middle East, there was no law in 2017 to acquit rape perpetrators when married. There are still skits in various parts of the world where the interests between parents who think of their raped daughter as shame and men who want to avoid punishment are matched, and judgments are made that the parties are not concerned about.

Some couples (Dink) have decided not to have children in modern times, while others do not marry and live together is common. In addition, same-sex marriages are taking place, and more and more countries recognize same-sex marriages and equivalent institutions, civil unions, as laws.

Marriage history.

The marriage system is a system created by composing that humans are society. In particular, it occurred from the social awareness that “human beings cannot live alone.” In the primitive era, when neither blood type tests nor DNA tests were possible, the need to distinguish between children and fathers inevitably emerged, resulting in this.

In addition, ancient marriages seem to be an auxiliary system for breeding itself. Like wild animals, men support women and offspring economically, and women mainly manage supplies and take care of their offspring in the house. In addition, men promise solid economic support to women and offspring, and women guarantee their biological children to men. However, as other forms of assumptions are recognized, scarcity is only reconsidered.

However, according to Sostein Veblen’s finite class theory, an American sociologist, economist, and founder of institutional economics, the marriage system was considered to be related to the beginning of ownership in human society. According to the theory of the finite class, the first opportunity for women’s “ownership” was that a peaceful primitive society turned into a barbaric looting society and forcibly captured female prisoners. In other words, as a peaceful primitive society transformed into a society with surplus products, a barbaric looting society began, and in the process of looting surplus products, warriors also robbed women, one of the useful spoils. This created a form of ownership-marriage, and a family with a man as the head was created. After that, the scope of slavery expanded, such as catching prisoners other than women, and eventually, the ownership-marriage form was expanded to women other than women caught from the enemy. And starting with owning a woman, the products produced by the woman were also owned by the man who owned the woman, and ownership was established for non-human objects. This in turn contributed to the establishment of the property rights system in human culture.

Plato even argued in his last book Law that men who have not been married until the age of 35 should be determined by law so that they do not enjoy their rights as adults. The trap is that Plato himself ended his life as a single… Of course, this is the case in conventional wisdom, and whether marriage is easy or not differs by period and region. By the time of making a living by hunting and gathering, the people who made up the family and those who could not make a living were divided according to their hunting and livelihood, and among them, polygamy, with several wives based on their excellent livelihood, existed. Before the family farming system became common, it was difficult for a single family to make an independent living in an agricultural society, so most men lived and died single because there were more single people than those who formed families and raised children.

The day of marriage is sometimes referred to as a special term, such as a gold wedding, a silver wedding, and a pastoral wedding. For other detailed terms, refer to this table.

Legal marriage.

In the past, the age at which men and women could marry with parental permission was 18 years old, but since 2007, the law has been revised to 18 years old.

In order for marriage to be established under the law, the intention (wedding intention) to marry between the two parties must be consistent with each other, and even the formal requirement of marriage registration must be combined. Therefore, the so-called “false marriage” without such intention to marry and register marriage for other purposes is fundamentally invalid, and in most cases in Korea, the right to inheritance is not recognized and has no legal relationship with the spouse’s relative.

Marriage registration is usually made in writing, but in consideration of the illiterate, they can attend offices of cities, districts, towns, and villages and write them verbally. Of course, in any case, it is impossible to report through an agent. However, reporting does not necessarily establish marriage, and marriage is completed only when the official in charge repairs it. And unlike the real estate register, registration in the family relations register is not a valid requirement for marriage.
